Tolerance Breaks

A tolerance break (T-Break) is a short, deliberate pause from cannabis that lets your body reset, so the same amount hits the way it used to. Wietly's T-Break tool in your Profile tracks the days for you and can suggest a length based on your own check-in history.

Why tolerance builds up

THC works by binding to CB1 receptors in your endocannabinoid system. With regular use, those receptors gradually become less responsive β€” a process called downregulation β€” so you need more THC to feel the same effect. This isn't a flaw in your body, it's just adaptation, and it's fully reversible.

The good news: CB1 receptor availability starts recovering within about 48 hours of stopping, and gets close to baseline within roughly 2–4 weeks for most people, even heavy daily users.

How long should your break be?

There's no single right answer β€” it depends on how often you've been using. As a general guide:

Usage patternSuggested break
Occasional (a session or two a week)3 days
Regular (a few times a week)7 days
Frequent (most days)14 days
Daily / heavy use21–30 days

This is exactly the logic behind the recommendation you see in the app: it looks at your check-ins over the last 4 weeks and suggests a length from that table. You can always pick a different goal β€” 3, 7, 14, or 30 days β€” when you start a break.

What to expect, day by day

  • Days 1–3 β€” THC clears from your system. This stretch is usually the hardest, especially for daily users.
  • Days 3–7 β€” CB1 receptors start recovering sensitivity. Sleep and appetite may feel a little off for heavier users, but this typically fades within the first week or two.
  • Days 7–14 β€” Most of the meaningful receptor recovery happens here. Occasional and moderate users are usually fully reset by this point.
  • Days 14–30 β€” Daily and heavy users reach a near-complete reset. First session back tends to hit noticeably harder.

Tips for a smoother break

  • Pick a goal you can actually stick to β€” a realistic 3-day win beats an abandoned 30-day attempt.
  • The first few days are the hardest part for regular users; it gets easier from there.
  • Mild irritability, restlessness, or disrupted sleep are normal for daily users and usually settle within a week or two.
  • Ending a break early isn't a failure β€” Wietly's T-Break tool lets you stop anytime, no streaks reset, no judgment.
  • When you're ready to smoke again, start low β€” your tolerance is lower than it was, so your usual amount will go further.

Starting a T-Break in Wietly

Open the app, go to your Profile, and tap Take a T-Break below your activity streak. Pick a goal length β€” Wietly will suggest one based on your recent check-ins β€” and your streak card switches to a progress ring for the length of your break. Logging a new check-in during an active break ends it early automatically.
